How the roster generator works

1. Add your staff. One name per line. Optionally set a maximum number of shifts for the week and the days each person cannot work.
2. Set the week. Pick the start date and tick the days you are open.
3. Add the shifts you need covered. A name (Open, Close, Night), a start and end time, and how many people each day. Add as many as you like.
4. Generate. The tool fills every slot, one shift per person per day, giving each shift to the available person with the fewest hours so far, so the week comes out fair. Press it again to shuffle who starts first.
5. Use it. Print the grid, download it to Excel, or copy it into the free roster templates. Nothing is saved on our side.

What it checks for you

• Nobody is rostered twice on the same day, and nobody works a day they marked unavailable.
• Nobody goes over their weekly shift limit.
• Hours are spread as evenly as the limits allow, and total hours per person are shown.
• Any shift that cannot be filled is flagged in the grid rather than quietly left short.
• NZ public holidays in the week are marked, because staff who work one are owed time and a half and possibly an alternative holiday.

What it does not do

This is a free roster maker for a single week. It does not know your staff's qualifications, contracted hours, leave balances or pay rates, and it cannot publish the roster to anyone.
